Dalla Cia Distillery in Stellenbosch

Discover the Italian art of distilling in Stellenbosch

In the heart of Bosman's Crossing in Stellenbosch, Dalla Cia is a family-owned South African distillery with Italian roots and a distilling heritage dating back to 1923.

The Dalla Cia family's distilling story began in Friuli, northern Italy, where Vittorio Dalla Cia acquired a small pot still in the 1920s and began producing Grappa.

Today, that tradition continues at the family's third-generation distillery in Stellenbosch, where Italian distilling craftsmanship meets South African grapes and terroir.

A Family Tradition of Grappa

Dalla Cia is particularly renowned for its artisanal Grappa.

Grappa is a traditional Italian spirit distilled from the fermented grape skins, or pomace, left after winemaking. At Dalla Cia, Grappa is produced using an Italian copper alembic still and traditional distilling techniques.

The result is a range of distinctive Grappas that express the character of the grape varieties from which they are made.

The Dalla Cia Story

More than a distillery

Dalla Cia's home in Bosman's Crossing is also home to Pane e Vino, the family's Italian food and wine bar next door to the distillery.

Here, visitors can experience Dalla Cia wines, Italian food and the family's distinctive Grappa offering in an informal and welcoming setting.

Vittorio Dalla Cia began the family's distilling tradition in Friuli in the 1920s.

His son Giorgio brought his knowledge of winemaking and distilling to South Africa and became an important figure in the country's wine industry. Giorgio later worked at Meerlust Estate, where he pioneered the production of Grappa on a South African wine estate.

In the 1990s, Giorgio and his son George established their boutique Grappa distillery in Stellenbosch, importing a copper alembic still from Italy.

The third generation of the Dalla Cia family continues that tradition today.
